I always thought he was kidnapped as a child while at the fair and put in a hypnotic state and kept in a basement. Under hypnosis he is sent out to murder people.
He never sees his captors and while he sleeps he has nightmares of his mother screaming for him at the fair while he was being kidnapped. What is the story Alice Cooper telling in the ';Steven'; trilogy?
This was always my take these songs...even though it's a concept album I always assumed the awakening wasn't part of the nightmare..it's when he wakes up and realizes what he's done...whether he was sleeping or not..he doesn't remember his actions...so the nightmare could have been very real and he's supressing the memory.
Steven by the way is one of my favorite songs.
Anyway..
I believe years ago and steven is about being torn between the little boy inside him who wants to stay out and play and take his temper tantrums and the adult man who is in turmoil repressing these feelings of lost youth....needing to be that little boy again to regain his innocence.
in the nightmare
he murders his wife-only women bleed
and has sex with her dead body-cold ethyl
years ago and steven may very well be about how he represses into his childhood because of the horror of what he's done.
in the awakening he becomes aware of his surroundings and sees the very real blood on his hands.
was it a nightmare?
was it real?
we may never know...
because he goes out and drowns himself in beer!
